Course description
- Improve your German as you concentrate on the primary skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing
- The main goal of the course will be speaking and the confident and fluent usage of the language.
- Your teacher orients the instruction toward practice. This way you will always be learning the language in a creative context.
- During instruction, we pay particular attention to creating an exciting atmosphere in which you can "play" with the language.
- The teachers incorporate short tests so you receive feedback on your language skill development.
Monday morning, when you arrive at school for the first time, you will complete a placement test. This will determine your language level so that you can be placed in the appropriate class. There is a written test and a short oral interview. When complete, the test results will be evaluated and the teachers at the institute will divide the participants into classes. You will be informed of the course you should attend.
Teaching materials
In our courses, we place great emphasis on a communicative, varied curriculum. These teaching methods may differ from those you are used to experiencing at home. We focus on the oral usage of the language so that you can practice and use German during your stay with us. Of course, there are also supplementary written exercises, especially right at the beginning. In these written exercises, we are not measuring how much is written.
Currently, we are using the following course materials (modifications possible):
- Worksheets and Magazines
- Audio and video materials
- Games
Teaching materials are included in the course price.
Description
Our summer school in Höchst is located in a former medieval monastery that serves as a conference centre for the Protestant Church during the rest of the year. In summer it is all yours and your friends. For the summer months of July and August did deutsch-institut rents the whole place that includes classrooms, bedrooms and a big assembly hall as well as leisure rooms and a large park. There are facilities for playing football, and basketball, having barbecues or simply lying lazily in the sun. The double and triple bedrooms are very comfortable. There are bathrooms with WC and showers on every floor. And for taking care of our participants, there is a room for a person in charge on every floor.
All rooms are furnished with:
- Single beds (bunkbeds in multi-bed rooms), wardrobe for clothing storage
- Bath with shower and toilet on the floor
- Bed linens and towels
The infrastructure of the residence:
- snack and drink vending machines in the lobby
- large outdoor area for playing sports (i.e., soccer, basketball)
- Art studio and a large auditorium for communal activities (i.e., parties or movies)
Full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner) is included when you book a stay in the residence. This means you will receive three meals a day.
The first meal on the day of arrival is dinner, and the last meal on the day of departure is breakfast.
Breakfast in Germany and Austria is typically cold (i.e., bread or roll, cereal, butter, egg, sausage or jam, juice, water or tea).
Lunch during the week consists of a warm buffet and a salad bar. On weekends you will receive a packed lunch. The packed lunch usually includes a sandwich, fruit, a sweet snack and a drink.
The third meal is dinner, which will also be served buffet style. Sometimes we grill out for dinner.
Our summer course in Höchst (Odenwald) is held in the Höchst Convent. The grounds of this residence are large with plenty of space to play sports, and have, as the crowning glory, a climbing wall. You can also make fun crafts in the art studio. The dining room, in which you eat breakfast, lunch and dinner with all the other course participants, is located on the ground floor. For movie night or the weekly party, a large meeting room is available to us.
You will generally be supervised by our team the entire time. It is possible you may be unsupervised for short periods, for example, between or during activities. During these times you will be exploring the area in groups of at least three participants (in accordance with our school rules). If you and your parents prefer more freedom, we recommend one of our courses with host family lodging. Of course, in the hotel itself, you can move about freely. There will be a contact person available to you at all times.
You will be sharing your room with other international course participants from did deutsch-institut. We will try as often as possible not to house you with individuals of the same nationality or native tongue. We can't guarantee this, however. If you would like to share a room with a friend, please let us know when you register and be sure to book the same room category.
